Practice Begins
My practice shoes came in! They’re called Character Shoes. Don’t ask me why because I don’t know. When I read the reviews, they recommended to size up so I went with an 8 and I’m glad I did. They fit perfectly!
My next shopping mission is to get my hands on some tights like the ones Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige wear on stage. There’s something magical going on there and I’m going to find it. I will keep you updated.
Fabulous News!
The lovely folks at Capital Ritz Banquet and Dance Center have donated their space to Joel and me to use for practice in Jefferson City. Those who know me well know I don’t like to drive so one of the biggest factors I had to consider before committing to this entire thing was the drive to Columbia two times a week. Now, we can split our time between JC and Columbia. WIN!
Baby Steps
Joel has started teaching me a few steps that we can later integrate into our routine. When he says these things out loud and shows me how to do it, it all looks very simple. But, in fact, making your feet do the same thing is a different story. Suddenly, I find my knees bowing out, my feet are skipping(?), I suddenly can’t count to three very well, and I find myself nervously laughing!
However, I am happy to report that after our second practice this last week, I was much improved and was able to add a few dance steps together. The layering of steps and putting them in a sequence did bring me back to my skating days. Remembering to prepare for what’s coming up while you’re still trying to make your body do what you want for that moment takes some brain power. Brain powers I hadn’t activated in a while - since I was 18 in fact and that was over a decade ago. Hello, brain! Wake up.
We’re going to get there.
Joel reminded me that in dance, when you misstep, “you keep going.” Because I kept wanting to quit once I fumbled and start over, but he just kept us going. And that’s such a good lesson. He’s right. And it was nice to be reminded of that. When you’re performing and you mess up, you just keep going.
Link is Ready!
The fabulous Chelsea Dodds at MCB has published my link on the website which means you can now support my journey and donate to the cause! This goes directly to the Missouri Contemporary Ballet and also every dollar counts as one vote for me and Joel. It all comes down to $$$ raised so every dollar matters.
